Everything Bagel
oil on wood, 8x10"
I had the good fortune of getting connected to Philip Korshak through instagram. Following his posts, you soon realize there's more than begals to this guy. This man is not merely a baker, he is a food nomad, bouncing around the country, delving into food to connect with fellow mankind. He's also a philosopher, a poet a songster ... with the spirit of a food nomad, who landed in my city of Philadelphia.
When he biked over to my studio, bringing a half dozen still-warm bagel babies, it was such a ray of sun once conversation took off immediately. Neither of us are shy, or have a limit of conversation when it comes to food. His sourdough bagel, coming from his starter which he names "Helen Mirrem" , he considers to be NYC style, inspired by a pizza dough making past life in Brooklyn.
These are like traveling to Europe (because everything tastes better when traveling and on vacation!) and having the most delectable crusty table bread with a crunchy surface protecting velvety soft and perfectly chewy inside. It wasn't a bagel I had known, it was a bread experience I wanted again, and again. I cannot wait until his shop opens in South Philly, though I'm grateful it's not my next door neighbor!
I had a hard time deciding which to paint, but when I emptied them all out onto my counter, I discovered a bounty of everything seeds/toppings and this painting was instantly born.
